Tool of the Trade

Value-area trading system

Trade where value actually lives.

Institutional-grade volume-profile analysis — value areas, market tension, and the 80% rule — distilled into high-probability breakout setups across equities, futures, and options.

Origins

Born in the Chicago pits.

Value-area analysis was forged in the 1980s trading pits of Chicago, where floor traders noticed that roughly 70% of the day's volume changed hands inside a narrow band of prices — the range the market treated as fair. That band became the value area.

Those pit observations were formalized into Market Profile by J. Peter Steidlmayer at the Chicago Board of Trade. What began as chalk marks on a trading card is now the volume-profile engine behind this system.

The concepts

A working vocabulary of value.

Every setup is built from six ideas about where volume concentrates — and what price does when it leaves.

Value Area

VA

The price zone where roughly 70% of a period's volume traded — the range institutions treat as fair, forming natural support and resistance.

Key insightPrice that leaves the value area returns to test its edge about 80% of the time.

Explosive Moves

BREAKOUT

A decisive break out of an established value area on heavy volume. Each break is scored on volume, structure, and historical follow-through.

Scoring90%+ perfect storm · 75–89% high probability · 60–74% moderate.

Market Tension

TENSION

The compression of price inside the value area — coiled energy, like a spring held down before it releases into expansion.

LevelsEXTREME › HIGH › MODERATE › LOW. Higher tension, bigger release.

The 80% Rule

80% RULE

When price moves outside the value area, it has roughly an 80% chance of returning to test the boundary before continuing on.

Breakout Probability

P(BREAK)

A composite read of volume profile, structure, historical pattern, and market state — expressed as the odds a break actually holds.

Confirms onClean structure, volume expansion, and follow-through momentum.

Point of Control

POC

The single price with the most traded volume in the profile — the strongest magnet, and a decisive support/resistance level in later sessions.

Use it asA reference for entries, exits, and gauging institutional interest.

The method

From raw ticks to a ranked setup.

Three stages turn live market data into an actionable signal with a defined entry, stop, and target.
